The festive season kicks off in November! Cold and dark nights shouldn’t put you off coming to Amsterdam at this time of year. It’s a beautiful time to indulge in comfort food, fairy lights, and get in the festive spirit. Have a look at the November highlights, and get in touch with us if you would like to experience this the local way.
1: Turn on the Lights!
The light festival starts with the lighting of the Christmas lights in Dam Square. Amsterdam’s Dam Square traditionally lights up at 19:00 with a magical theatrical show. The climax of the performance is the illumination of hundreds of thousands of energy-efficient LED lights on the façade of the majestic de Bijenkorf building, as well as a festive fireworks display. After Turn on the Lights, de Bijenkorf organises a special late-night shopping event to allow visitors to pick up some early Christmas gifts or have a bite to eat at the international restaurant.
2: Sinterklass arrives in Amsterdam
The Dutch Christmas tradition starts in November. Experiencing the traditions of a new country is a great way to understand the people and the culture. Every November, Sinterklaas travels from his home in Spain to the Netherlands, bringing presents and special treats for the children. The day after he arrives in the Netherlands, he traditionally takes part in a colourful parade through Amsterdam. Book a walking tour with us, and your private, local guide will tell you all the stories behind this tradition.
3: Museum and Art by Night
See the art in a completely new light – after dark! Come on a tour with us and we can help you navigate this vibrate evening in the city. Museum Night Amsterdam truly is a night at the museum, with exceptional and surprising cultural programming across the entire city. Enjoy the Rijksmuseum’s ‘Night Watch’, drink in hand and canapé in the other, cycle over to one of the many music performances around the city and just imbibe that festive spirit. Don’t forget that it’s not all about the major Amsterdam museums. Museum Night Amsterdam is an occasion when some of the city’s smaller institutions truly shine.
4: ICE Amsterdam
On 17 November the winter ice experience Ice Amsterdam will open on one of the city’s most beautiful locations: right in front of the Rijksmuseum on Museum Square. Ice-skate underneath a replica of the famous Magere Brug (The Skinny Bridge) and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate or glue wine. Their restaurant offers all sorts of delicious hot treats to keep you warm and comfortable.
