The light festival starts with the lighting of the Christmas lights in Dam Square. Amsterdam’s Dam Square traditionally lights up at 19:00 with a magical theatrical show. The climax of the performance is the illumination of hundreds of thousands of energy-efficient LED lights on the façade of the majestic de Bijenkorf building, as well as a festive fireworks display. After Turn on the Lights, de Bijenkorf organises a special late-night shopping event to allow visitors to pick up some early Christmas gifts or have a bite to eat at the international restaurant.
2: Sinterklaas arrives in Amsterdam
The Dutch Christmas tradition starts in November. Experiencing the traditions of a new country is a great way to understand the people and the culture. Every November, Sinterklaas travels from his home in Spain to the Netherlands, bringing presents and special treats for the children. The day after he arrives in the Netherlands, he traditionally takes part in a colourful parade through Amsterdam. Book a walking tour with us, and your private, local guide will tell you all the stories behind this tradition.
